Chapter Thirteen

RUBY

“Maddy, which girl did Harley pick?”

“Now, Ruby, why would you want to do that to yourself? What does it matter? You are both here now, so make the most of it.”

“That sounds like it was Georgia.”

“I said no such thing and, if you ask me, you both fit with him but for different reasons. That is why I chose both of you.”

“You picked us?” I stopped walking. “That is very different.”

“I did the hard part of reading every ad, then showed him the best two.”

“I see. Then what was it about me that made you choose me?”

“Your friendly welcoming smile and ad.” She pulled me along with her. “Come on, we need to hurry before lunch starts.”

“It had nothing to do with my looks or that I come from a farm, and he has a farm?”

“Of course, the farm thing was important. Looks are not so important, but it did help that you are so pretty.”

“You think I am pretty?” I looked in the store window reflection of myself. “I have never thought of myself as pretty.”

“Has no young man ever said as such to you?” She held the store door open. “What about your parents?”

“Parents have to be kind and I was never one for boys. I always had my head in a book or was home with the children.”

“You are not on the farm anymore and I suspect many men will think you pretty. Harley will have to be careful.”

“Maddy, what brings you in today?” the clerk asked. “Do I have an order for you?”

“I need a dress or two for this young lady,” Maddy smiled. “This is Nellie. She will help us.”

“Hello, I am Ruby. I need a dress for helping Harley at his restaurant.”

“She needs a fancy dress and a midday dress, for starters,” Maddy added.

“Have a look at the racks and see if something looks good to you.”

“Nellie, I do not know what I need for a big town like this, and I have this red hair.”

“Your hair is beautiful; never frown about that.” She looked around. “With your figure and that lovely face, just about anything would look good. How about you try on this green one?”

“Maddy, what do you think?”

“Get in there and try it on.”

Thirty minutes later, we left with two dresses wrapped up. Maddy did not let me pay for them. She said she had been instructed by Harley to buy me a few dresses and that there would be no further discussion on the matter.

“Why would he buy dresses for me? I may not be who he chooses.” I walked along with Maddy carrying my dresses.

“Because he wants you to be happy. He likes you. He is generous. Ruby, there are many reasons, it is how he is with people, it is how his parents were.”

“He probably wants me to look as good as Georgia so I do not embarrass him.”

“Hush now, child, you must stop thinking that way. Georgia is a good dresser. She has had more opportunity for it but, in my opinion, you have more about you as a person than she.
